Continuing the archaeological investigations at Manydown

Now that the first stage of archaeological work at Manydown has been completed, we have started work on the second phase to further explore specific areas of interest on the site. As you will be able to see if you are in the local area, current activity is focused along the edge of the Roman Road in Winklebury and the Worting Road on the way to Oakley.

We expect this work to last approximately 10 weeks and in anticipation of development, further archaeological investigations will then take place across a wider area of the site. This work is expected to continue throughout the year and will allow the archaeologists to reveal further insights into the earliest chapters of Basingstoke’s past.

All archaeological evidence will be carefully recorded and collected and we look forward to sharing more detail with the local community when all of the findings have been verified and assessed.

We are working with Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) again on this next stage of archaeological surveys. MOLA undertook the initial trenching work at Manydown and has offices in Basingstoke so they are familiar with the site and local area.
